Danez Smith

solitude

learn to love the music of your home:

florescent song             broken sink percussion
heater hum      a choir of dust tumbling across the floor

flies outside the kitchen window
your upstairs neighbor’s toilet
            the bus at the corner

the rooster two houses down
            construction at sunrise
            rush hour

footsteps of the ghost you know must be here
her laugh         her nails on the door       her eyes blinking

your breath

Danez Smith is a poet, performer, and playwright from St. Paul, MN who is still slightly afraid of his mama’s belt. He is a Cave Canem fellow and has work published or forthcoming in PANK, Vinyl, Phantom Limb, Muzzle and elsewhere. He recently earned his BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was a founding member of the First Wave Hip-Hop Theatre Ensemble. He enjoys the occasional dance battle with his roommate and Capri Suns on hot summer days.
