Peter LaBerge

From the Still

(the single shot fired behind the truck) (the blistered
heat in the tired mouth) (the last

leaves to catch him) (the roots cradling the rack)
(the river-gutted grief) (the bullet lifted

like a promise) (the stumps emptied
of expectation) (the cabin down the hill

smoking) (the truck’s excited breath)
            (the wind ushering everything

underneath) (the doe understanding
this kind of softness) (the night

falling like this animal inside of us)
(the dark pouring into the lifeless mouth)
