Carla Carlson
In her mind, goes to the MoMA,
to the Louvre. It’s her birthday.
Two carrot cakes on the dining table.
He’s back from the gym, his own kind
of animal, nose-blowing, and hooves.
Not yet eight a.m., Claire’s ink
thick—what to say? having been
spoken over, weighing her lines
paratactically, having become
spicier, a cake waiting to be iced.
The little heater by her twisted knees.
Carla Carlson is the author of the chapbook Love and Oranges. Her poems have been published by Thimble Magazine, Derailleur Press, Adelaide Literary Magazine, The Mom Egg, and more. Her manuscript in progress INVENTION OF CLAIRE, (Claire is the featured persona in each of fifty untitled poems) has been a finalist for the Laureate Prize at Harbor Review, 2021, and a semi-finalist for the Washington Prize at The Word Works, 2018. Carla is a poetry instructor at The Writing Institute at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY.
