Sara Fitzpatrick Comito
Flouting austerity
bletted medlars, persimmon, past-abetted,
custard apple from earnest pollen
Quixote’s straw is ingenuity,
sapote Nahuatl largess
parsimonious the service tree
that does the thing itself
sorghum is more sober
with no such calyx flares
teff, demure
in its magnanimity
hops were wrested to conspiracy
despite all lofty hopes
nothing yet to come from soil
except those things that come from it
