Carolyn Guinzio
All The Rage
The locals waved at the river-
boat from the banks of the river,
and the river waved back.
We locked our things in the safe.
In the lock, we waited. We wanted
to feel their level. Pfennigs and francs
on the floor of the river
said the word round. The rusted
husk of a truck waits
until the dim evening hours
to show itself—when it’s too late
to complain that the beauty
promised by the guide has abandoned
the river, and the river has worn
the color of luck off the coins.
