Cooper Esteban Renner
Anthem
Strange
How this body of death
Delights me. I
Think of it when I
Am far from it. I
Remember it
In the other country. I
Wake up in leaf-mold,
Covered in fur.
And the trees―
The trees walk shining
Into the sun. I
Like it.
*The poem’s ending recasts lines from the title poem of ‘The Trees Stand Shining’, a collection of Native American poetry selected by Hettie Jones.
Cooper Esteban Renner’s most recent poetry collection is Florid Victorian Object (Ravenna Press, 2016). A collection of his drawings will be included in Triple No. 8, upcoming from Ravenna.
