Mary Biddinger
Perhaps This is For You
The enemy of rice is the sea.
An ocean has no arm since it is
an arm. No longer having to piss
outdoors, I’m tame like a curtain.
People miss the way things hurt.
Just blame it on the barometer,
epidemic of shoplifted bikinis.
Articles calling every bystander
a true hero. Math textbooks nix
the formula for target scents:
Roman candle, radish, wet paw.
I misunderstood what was meant
by vaudeville. It was not an act.
But everything turned out okay.
Mary Biddinger’s poetry collection Department of Elegy will be published by Black Lawrence Press in early 2022. Her poems and flash fiction have recently appeared or are forthcoming in The Adroit Journal, Bennington Review, Crazyhorse, DIAGRAM, The Laurel Review, On the Seawall, and Southern Indiana Review, among others. She teaches literature and creative writing at the University of Akron and NEOMFA program. Find her here: www.marybiddinger.com
